Voltana Ademi, mayor of Shkodra, is no longer the president of the Association of Albanian Municipalities after being discharged and replaced with Pjerin Ndreu.
The decision was taken during today’s meeting, which also named as vice-president Alma Hoxha and Ilir Xhakolli.
Earlier on, Ademi wrote a letter to the diplomatic corps denouncing what she referred to as an “attempt to change the governing bodies of the association” ahead of the Constitutional Court’s session on the local elections.
According to the mayor of Shkodra, the move is a clearly aimed effort to shun arguments contesting the results of the local elections held on June 2019, which is one of the primary tasks of the association in the first place.
“Today, exponents from the Socialist Party tried to undermine democracy. Today, an effort to illegally seize the Association of Albanian Municipalities took place, acts undertaken by members of the Socialist Party, without any legitimate rights nor members of the Association of Albanian Municipalities. Every move that hides behind a political and arbitrary motive openly undermines rule of law principles and local democracy”, said the mayor of Shkodra on a Facebook post.
Furthermore, Ademi recalls that the revision on the legitimacy of the local polls is one of the 15 conditions set by the EU in order to launch accession negotiations.
Voltana Ademi is the only mayor in Albania coming from an opposition party. Her predecessor, Valdin Pjetri was sacked from office after the release of some documentation showing that he had been convicted in Italy.
