A majority of Albanian citizens believe that there were irregularities at the polls, however, they dismiss the idea that it might have impacted the outcome of the elections. Among those who admit to electoral fraud, not all agree that the process needs to be repeated.
These were the results of the survey conducted by the prestigious company MRB for Euronews Albania. When the surveyed were asked to give their opinion on the claims made by the leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha that “elections were rigged”, “major manipulations committed by the government” and that April 25 was an “electoral massacre”.
Asked about these allegations, those surveyed responded:
- Elections were fair, the result was clear, cannot be contested – 44.7%
- There were some irregularities from the government’s side, but it didn’t impact the outcome – 11.4%
- There were some irregularities, not only from the government’s side, but it did not determine the winner – 17.8%
- There were some serious manipulations by the government that determined the winner 23.2%
52.4% of the surveyed agreed there were irregularities or electoral fraud, but 55.7% of them (29.2% of the 52.4%) do not believe that these irregularities were so grave to determine the outcome of the elections, meanwhile, 55.9% are against repeating the polls.
What caught the attention is the fact that 78.3% of Socialist voters believe that elections were “fair” and the result was “clear” and it cannot be “contested”, meanwhile from DP’s voters only 52.1% thought there were “some serious manipulations on the government’s side that were able to determine the winner”.
Methodology
The survey was done for Euronews Albania by the prestigious company MRB who conducted 1.000 face-to-face interviews (49.5% male, 50.5% female) in urban and rural areas with eligible voters (+18) from May 25 until June 2.
