Former Gjirokastra Mayor sentenced to 1 year in prison

The former Mayor of Gjirokastra, Zamira Rami, was found guilty of abuse of office charges and sentenced to one year in prison.

Rami will not spend any time behind bars as her sentence will be converted to community work.

“Based on Article 63 in the Criminal Code, the prison sentence will be suspended and replaced by 120 hours of community work within 6 months, with the condition that the defendant respects the provisions stipulated by Article 62 of the Criminal Code”, a statement released by the court read.

The charges were brought up to court by the Special Anti-Corruption Structure in Albania after two families sued Rami that she had illegally demolished their homes for the sake of two urban qualification projects.

The families complained as no expropriation procedure had been launched.

After investigating the families’ claims, SPAK determined that their incurred financial damage totaled 5.6 million Albanian Lek.
