The Chief Nurse of the Infective Diseases Hospital, Ana Luca, who turned into a symbol during the difficult pandemic months, has now decided to leave her career in Albania and depart to Germany.

This story brings back to the attention the exodus of medical personnel, leaving the country in pursuit of a better life in Germany.

But to Luca, her decision to flee the country goes even further.

“The stones of Albania’s necklace will fall one after another. It doesn’t come as a coincidence that in the world structures are referred to as human resources. The day will come that the resource will drain” while expressing her gratitude to those who supported her throughout her career.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, the General Secretary of the Association of Albanian Doctors in Germany, Aurora Meta-Dollenberg, said that the massive fleeing of Albanian medical practitioners towards the EU is a “wound” that is not healing since 2008.

“In the year speaking, and throughout the pandemic, we’ve had a continuous migration of doctors to Germany, as well as other countries”, she said.

During her word, she emphasized that the Albanian government must find a solution and put a halt to the worrying phenomenon.

“In Albania, there are too few doctors or medical personnel. On a Western Balkans scale, it ranks first for the least staff”, said Meta-Dollenberg, adding the main reason is low wages.

The epidemiological situation has significantly improved in Albania.

On Sunday, only 2 cases were reported across the country, after testing nearly 1,700 citizens.

Currently, Albania counts 118 active cases and hospital figures have dropped to a total of 5 patients.
