Today the Constitutional Court will start the evaluation of the two lawsuits claiming the illegitimacy of the local elections held back in June 2019, when Erjon Veliaj was re-elected as mayor of Tirana.

The Court’s agenda for today will include both lawsuits filed by the Association of Municipalities of Albania, which has appealed the electoral process taking place on June 30th 2019, as well as the procedures for the registration of BD in these elections.

However, the Constitutional Court decided to overturn the appeal request of the Association of Municipalities for Local Autonomy to become part of the process as an interested party. This decision was critiqued by the attorney of the Municipality Association, Jordan Daci, who asked that this association become part of the local autonomy.

Count arguments also came by the representative of the Prime Minister, Elira Kokona as well as the legal representative of President Meta, Bledard Dervishaj.

The Local elections in 2019, were held without the presence or participation of the opposition, which boycotted these elections, and in 27 municipalities, there was only one candidate.

President Meta issued a decree that nullified the elections on June 30th, claiming another date, October 13th, as the valid election day.
