“It wasn’t Albania or North Macedonia that failed, but the EU” – this was the statement made by PM Edi Rama from Skopje, one day after the decision of the EU member states to postpone the date of the first Intergovernmental Conference with the two countries, after Bulgaria’s veto on North Macedonia.
“The European Union failed, not Albania or North Macedonia. We are an important economic partner to North Macedonia. We haven’t failed, they have failed. It is their home, we want to enter this home, so it is them that decide, not us. We are in Europe, we are surrounded by European borders. The only regret I have is that it would be better for them to tell us; ‘we want you in our family, but there are certain rules and you’re not ready yet’, because a strange situation is created and citizens in Albania, who trust European officials start to think that there is a problem with our internal politics,” said Rama.
On the other hand, the Macedonian PM, Zoran Zaev stated that the decision of EU is a great despair for both countries, but also a lack of success on the side of EU politics.
According to Zaev, despite this decision by the European Union, the governments of both countries demonstrate European values.
“For North Macedonia and Albania, membership into the EU remains the only road,” said the PM of North Macedonia.
The declarations by both prime ministers were made during the Economic Forum in Skopje, which was held in North Macedonia for the first time.
The forum brought together political leaders and the business community from the region, with the goal of building collaborations for regional development.
