The American Chamber of Commerce sees corruption as the main obstacle undermining economic activities in Albania and urged for uncompromised combat with concrete penalties against abusers.
In its “Investment Agenda 2021”, the independent business organization enumerates several recommendations for the Albanian government, including more accountability in order to build public trust.
“In particular, apply the advanced e-services or fully transparent public platforms to the following agencies/ activities: 1) Land Administration 2) Customs Administration 3) Tax Administration and 4) Public Procurement”, wrote AmCham.
The American Chamber also suggested a strategy to attract foreign investments, to be monitored and implemented by top posts in the executive, as well as cut down the bureaucratic process for making investments.
“Albania ranks poorly in the World Bank’s Doing Business report for the time it takes to complete an investment. North Macedonia and Serbia for instance have set up much faster investment permit processes – a crucial reason why they attract higher FDI levels. This is a key determining factor for AmCham investors as well”, it underlined in its Investment Agenda 2021.
Moreover, the organization says that the objective of the recommendations set forth is creating a transparent system, free from political influence, in public procurement as well as guaranteeing a more inclusive public consultation.
