Earlier today, the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, announced that the National Council on the Territory has approved the permit for the construction of the new National Theater.
“The Albanian KKT has just approved the permit for the construction of the New National Theater, by Bjarke Ingels (BIG)”, wrote Veliaj on his personal Facebook account.
This decision comes at a time, when the Constitutional Court has yet to give a judgment regarding the lawsuit filed by the president of the country, Ilir Meta, after the state-ordered demolition of the previous building.
The Alliance for the Protection of the Theater (AMT) has called this announcement a provocation and a message that the current administration is sending to the Constitutional Court, putting pressure on them to make the “right” decision.
The current project of the new building of the National Theater has been drafted by the Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels, and is planned to be built at the same spot as the old building that was demolished on May 17th of last year.
This issue has been the cause for numerous protests by activists of the civil society, who ended up creating the Alliance for the Protection of the Theater and who claim that the government’s decision was unlawful and had hidden purposes.
The debate for the construction of the new National Theater started back in 2017, but the ultimate demolition of the theater was carried out after the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, signed an agreement for the construction of the new building, with several renowned Albanian artists and actors.
