Over the last 5 years – Albania registered 133 victims due to workplace accidents

Accidents in the workplace have seen worrying trends in the last five years, taking the lives of 133 citizens in our country.

From 2016 to May 2021, based on data collected by the High Inspectorate of Work, there has been a total of 810 accidents in the workplace.

Out of the total 133 victims, 26 of them or around 20% lost their lives due to accidents in public enterprises, whereas 107 of them, in the private sector.

The number of fatalities in the workplace has been on the rise in the last 2 years, where in 2019, 38 victims were reported whereas in 2020, there were 29.

The sectors, where the highest number of accidents occur are mines, the construction sector, the electric power industry and road accidents.

In 77% of employees getting into accidents that weren’t fatal, the causes were directly related to the safety and health conditions at the workplace.

In regards to the violators, the High Inspectorate of the Workplace has issued 627 administrative fines, amounting to ALL 136.9 million. Around 5% of them were imposed on public institutions.

According to the Albanian Constitution, only miners and oil riggers are covered with obligatory life insurance, whereas any other kind of activity doesn’t receive any serious coverage.

In cases, when the employer doesn’t notify the High Inspectorate of Work and Social Services, in the occasion of incidents or accidents in the workplace, the law foresees a ALL 100.000 fine.
