“A victory for Albania” were the words used by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to describe the country’s mandate as a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council.
Among the priorities listed by PM Rama was fighting discrimination, antisemitism, and islamophobia. But also, fostering religious tolerance and strengthening the role of women in peacebuilding processes.
In the official welcoming ceremony, PM Rama said that the non-permanent membership is a milestone not only for Albania but for the entire region.
Challenges such as the earthquake and the pandemic, which according to the Albanian top executive, were overcome successfully, are signs that Albania has “matured”.
Speaking over the values that Albania will bring to the table at the Security Council, PM Rama mentioned the values of the European Union as “universal”.
The Security Council is one of the main bodies of the United Nations that is tasked with preserving peace and security among its member states.
