Armela Krasniqi has just been voted as the new chairperson of the Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA), after receiving a parliamentary majority.
The move has been deeply criticized by the opposition, accusing the ruling majority of trying to exert absolute power on AMA.
The EU delegation to Albania, as well as the OSCE Presence, previously called on the government to postpone today’s voting until the new parliament is constituted however, their appeal was dismissed as voting pushed through during today’s plenary session.
The EU has introduced a set of new requirements for the independence of national media regulators, including an obligation to establish transparent and independent procedures for the appointment, or dismissal, of a chairperson or board members.
Previously, Armela Krasniqi held the post of General Director of the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA), while from 2013 to 2017 she served as the Director of the Department of Communication and Public Relations at the Office of the Prime Minister of Albania.
