No fatalities and eight new COVID-19 cases were detected in Albania over the last 24 hours. The Health Ministry confirmed that the new cases were discovered in Tirana, Korca, Devoll, and Gjirokastra.

Five patients are receiving medical care at the Infective Diseases hospital in Tirana.

Authorities report that there are 72 active cases across the country, of which 29 in Tirana and 10 in Korca.

2,456 citizens have died from COVID-19 related complications, while more than 130,000 have recovered.

So far, the fast-spreading Delta strain has not been detected in Albania, although authorities have been recently urging for increased prudence.

According to infectious disease doctor, Ilir Alimehmeti, the COVID-19 strain initially discovered in India is “40% more transmissible than previous variants”.

Furthermore, he suggests that citizens who have received both vaccine doses are at less of a risk of contracting the Delta strain.
