Kosovo’s Minister of Economy, Artanë Rizvanolli called the ‘Kosova e Re’ thermal power station a dead project, while raising the alarm that the country might have to pay €20 million euros in damages, as the case has gone to the International Arbitration Court.
The American company ‘CountourGlobal’, which withdrew from this project back in December 2020, sued Kosovo in the Arbitration Court on allegations of not respecting the contract. Rizvanolli in turn, stated that there was never any transparency revolving the specifics and funding for this project.
“This is a dead project, but unfortunately this is a project, for which as a nation we will continue to have to pay for. The case is currently on trial at the International Arbitration Court, and our State Attorney is defending Kosovo but there’s a risk. I hope that this won’t happen but there’s a risk that we can end up losing millions, with an estimation reaching up to €20 million euros,” said Rizvanolli.
Back in 2017, the Government of Kosovo led by then PM Ramush Haradinaj, signed a deal with ‘CountourGlobal’ for the construction of this thermal power station with a 500 megawatts capacity that would cost €1.3 billion euros.
‘Kosova e Re’ should have started work since last year and was planned to finish in three years. However, in December 2020, ‘ContourGlobal’ announced their withdrawal from this project with the reasoning that they had ceased to build coal projects, while also mentioning the changes that had occurred in Kosovo at the time. The LVV (Self-Determination Movement) had come out openly against this project.
