At a time when the dialogue between Kosovo-Serbia in Brussels continues to be characterized by tensions and disagreements, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has come out with a statement announcing that he is ready to begin a new campaign, in order to ensure that more countries recognize Kosovo’s sovereignty.
In addition, he said that he believes that this process will be conducted in collaboration with the head of the White House.
A report by renowned German press, Reuters states that through a declaration given during a recent press conference, Erdogan said that he hopes to bring up the issue of the worldwide recognition of Kosovo, during his discussions with US president, Joe Biden, at the General Assembly of the United Nations, which will be held in fall.
Erdogan also noted that he will be proposing to work together on this matter and bring up the number of countries recognizing Kosovo.
Kosovo declared its independence back in 2008, but according to a list published by their Foreign Ministry, only 117 countries have recognized it to date.
Through the Washington Agreement signed on September 4th 2020, Serbia has pledged to put an end to its campaign involved in getting countries to withdraw their Kosovo recognitions, whereas Kosovo has taken a pledge of its own, to not apply to become a member of international organizations for a period of one year.
