The construction of the bypass at the museum city of Gjirokastra is continuing, although UNESCO has called for its cessation.

A report on the state of registered cultural heritages also touches upon Gjirokastra and the imminent threat that this project might cause, which aims to diverge car traffic away from the designated museum area.

UNESCO has called for a revision since when the Albanian government presented the bypass project in 2016, while three years later the former said that it would suspend the project, although it didn’t.

However, in a report dedicated to Gjirokastra, it is stated that the government submitted a request to review a new proposal for the bypass project in 2021, but the world heritage protection party requested additional information, something that the Albanian government failed to provide.

Under these circumstances, UNESCO is set to adopt a resolution demanding the cessation of construction work, as well as establish a mission set to verify the conditions in Gjirokastra and make the appropriate recommendations accordingly.

Given that Gjirokastra is enlisted among UNESCO world heritages, no intervention can be made without approval or recommendation, as it may damage the cultural values and risk its status altogether.
