Socialist elected MP Petro Koçi testified in front of the Special Structure Against Corruption over his declarations that elements of organized crime from the city of Fier are seizing public funds.

Koçi said that the allegations were based after meeting with the electorate in Fier and that he could not point out specific names amid a lack of substantial evidence.

“My stance is not to settle any account against politicians, but criminals”, Koçi said.

“The majority of the officials in Fier didn’t welcome my declaration and this implies that it is true so it hurts them”, he added. “I will continuously be that politician that does the utmost for a clean political life”.

According to him, politicians need to be supported so they don’t get suppressed by threats.

Last week, Koçi took it to social media to claim that people with criminal backgrounds are using public tenders for money laundering as well as threatening state functionaries and competitors.

He also reiterated these allegations during an interview on Euronews Albania, describing the organized crime groups as becoming more solid as the years go by, putting their illicit wealth in the construction industry.

“Drug trafficking protagonists have now legalized business subjects that win public tenders”, Koçi wrote on Facebook.

“They do this either through direct ties with directors in various institutions or by intimidating specific officials that carry out procurements as well as eliminating competitors in the tender process”, he explained.

His public accusation came on July 16, ten days after SPAK arrested the mayor of Lushnja, and some of his subordinates, on corruption charges.
