The more contagious strain of COVID-19, broadly known as Delta, has been confirmed in Albania, said the country’s Technical Committee of Experts during a press conference.
However, despite the slight rise in new infections, which has not been associated with a rise in deaths or hospitalizations, experts consider that it will not be necessary to put new restrictive measures in force.
The new spike in daily cases, experts say, is linked to the number of unvaccinated citizens.
In total there are 9 patients at the Infective Diseases Hospital in the capital, with one of them having received only the first vaccine dose, while the rest had not previously passed COVID-19 nor were vaccinated, said the experts during the weekly conference.
According to a tally kept by the Health Ministry, nearly 500,000 citizens have been injected with both doses.
The country has not logged any coronavirus-related deaths since June 26, while the virus has claimed an estimated 2,456 lives from the beginning of the pandemic.
