SPAK has appealed the decision of the Special Court to drop the investigation against former defense minister Fatmir Mediu.
A few days ago, the Special Court turned down a request to retry the former defense minister arguing that no new evidence has been presented and that the prosecution could have investigated him in the last 10 years since he had no parliamentary immunity.
A new probe on Fatmir Mediu was sought by SPAK, accusing the state official of being responsible for the tragic Gerdec explosion.
In February, the family of a seven-year-old boy that died at the former ammunition factory, sent a letter to the Special Court pleading to accept SPAK’s request to launch a probe against Mediu.
Last Tuesday, the chief of SPAK Arben Kraja told Euronews Albania of their intent to appeal the court’s decision.
The powerful blast, just 11 kilometers northwest of the capital, claimed the lives of 26 workers, who were mainly locals and hence lacked the knowledge to handle the complex process of dismantling obsolete ammunition.
