Interior minister Niko Peleshi announced on Wednesday that after 2 weeks of continuous efforts the fire in the Karaburun peninsula was fully extinguished, also rescuing the National Llogara Park.
On Facebook, Peleshi posted an aerial video showing the area and captioning it “after two weeks of efforts and sacrifices there are no more fire fronts in Karaburun”.
“A battle for hundreds of hours, hundreds of troops from the Armed Forces and firefighters, experts of protected areas and civil emergencies work tirelessly to rescue the National Llogara Park”, added Peleshi.
Over 300 fire outbreaks were recorded in Albania according to Global Forest Watch (GFW), an organization that monitors fires across the globe through satellite images.
The State Police said on Tuesday that at least 33 people are suspected of setting fires that burned through several areas of the Albania territory, of which 15 have been arrested, 2 are wanted and 16 are under investigation.
According to GFW, Albania has lost over 40,000 hectares of forests in the past 20 years, or 6.2% of its total until 2000. The main reasons are believed to be illegal logging and uncontrolled fires.
