Albanian political parties from non-Serbian communities and members of the civil society in northern Mitrovica have decided to join forces in the race for the local elections planned to take place on October 17th, in Kosovo.
This political unison called ‘Civil Initiative’, won’t just include a common list of candidates running for communal advisors, but these entities will also share the main candidate running for mayor in this commune.
The candidate is Erden Atiq, from the ranks of LVV (Self-Determination Movement). An engineer of 37, Atiq also ran during the snap elections for the commune’s mayor back in 2018, under the same party banner.
The chances for the north of Mitrovica to be led by a mayor that is not of Serbian descent are slim, considering the fact that over 80% of residents are Serbian. However, this joining of forces by Albanian political figures could bring about changes, at least when it comes to the number of communal advisors.
In the upcoming elections for the communal parliament, the representatives of this initiative aim to be represented by at least 5 to 7 advisors.
This would increase the decision-making power of the non-Serbian population in this commune.
According to the representatives of this civil initiative racing against the Serbian List in this commune, another goal of this unison is claiming the post of the deputy mayor in this commune, which is currently held of Bosnian, Adriana Hoxhic.
