17 active wildfires in Albania, 7 of them are new

Wildfires continue to overwhelm the entire territory since the month of August. From north to south there are around 17 active wildfires, 7 of which are new.

New wildfires:

  • Golaj village, Kukes
  • Kallarat village, Vlore
  • Barkanesh village, Durres
  • Maskuri village, Durres
  • Rrajce village, Elbasan
  • Fatishe village, Elbasan
  • Lab Maralloz village, Gjirokaster

Active wildfires:

  • Terbun Mountain, Puke
  • Flet village, Puke
  • Lodërtune villages, Shkoder
  • Drisht village, Shkoder
  • Thirre village, Lezhe
  • Patalej village, Lezhe
  • Katund i Vjeter village, Mirdite
  • Runa Peak, Kukes
  • Dragobi village, Tropoje
  • Kaçni village, Diber

According to authorities, the situation is presenting complications in 5 areas.

In the village of Flet, in Puka the situation has become problematic because the flames continue to spread toward the crown of the Dardhe and Sakat villages. Meanwhile, it is impossible to intervene from the land and till now, a surface area of about 350 hectares of forestland has been burned.

In the village Thirre, in Miredita the wildfires have scorched a large surface space passing the Xhuxhe village and burning over 190 hectares of land.

In Katund I Vjeter, Miredite, the flames are posing a great risk seeing that they are close to a residential area.

At the Runa Peak in Kukes, the fires have been favored by the strong winds reaching all the way to the Laku I Mollave and Laku I Thive, covering a large area, filled with pines and beeches.

In Rrajc village, Elbasan, the fires are crossing through forestland that are part of the UNESCO list of protected sites.

The Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, has declared that 3 000 hectares of forestland have now been seriously damaged by the recent wildfires.

Over 300 wildfires were registered during the summer in several areas around Albania according to Global Forest Watch (GFW), which monitors the situation of forest fires around the world through satellite view. The majority of fires broke out in the past 3 weeks.
