Around 300 Afghan citizens are expected to arrive today in Albania. Our public institutions are prepared to receive the first group of Afghan political emigrants that will be staying here temporarily, at the Rinas airport.
Their arrival was planned for yesterday but because of the chaotic developments at the airport of Kabul, their travel was postponed to an hour that has yet to be determined.
These afghan citizens will be housed at the buildings of ‘Student City’ – Tirana’s University Student Dorms. In addition, another group is planned to be housed to several hotels in Durres.
Their settlement in Tirana and Durres is related to their proximity to the airport and US embassy, where the Afghan citizens will conduct all the necessary procedures in regards to being issued an American visa.
Albania has accepted the request made by the United States recently regarding taking in several thousand Afghan citizens whose lives are at risk from the Taliban, because of their close collaboration with the Western US and NATO forces during the last 2 decades.
Kosovo, North Macedonia, Canada and Great Britain are some of the countries that will serve as transit points for these Afghan citizens, before they reach their final destination, – the United States.
