The Afghan political refugees that will be arriving in Albania, will only stay at the University Dorms – a neighborhood in Tirana, known as ‘Student City’ – for a short time, because on October 1st, they will have to be made available to students starting the new school year.

Out of the 22 buildings located at the ‘Student City’, that have a capacity of 5 000 beds, 7 of them, with a capacity of 1 200 beds will be put at the disposal of Afghan refugees. At the moment, there is a total of 930 students currently at the dorms.

However, because of their arrival citizens living around this neighborhood say that they will limit outings with their children in this area, out of fear and uncertainty. Some of the students interviewed also expressed their concern.

“Bringing 200 Afghan citizens here, in the middle of students isn’t fair. We will stop going out in the evenings, going out for walks and fresh air, because these are people we don’t know. We are reluctant toward people we don’t know, they are of a different faith, they have other traditions,” said the citizen.

However, according to other citizens, the arrival of Afghans at the ‘Student City’ isn’t as worrisome.

“They are the same as us, they need help and I believe that it is a human duty to help them” they said.

In order to ensure the safety and security in these areas and buildings that will be occupied by the emigrants, Euronews Albania learned that there will be a heightened presence of police officers.
