2 planes carrying 182 Afghan passenger have arrived this Sunday to our country. The Foreign Ministry announced that at 3:50 a.m. the first plane of 154 passengers arrived at the Rinas airport, 108 of whom were accomodated at the university student dorms in Tirana, and the rest in the city of Durres.
Meanwhile, another plane of 28 passengers arrived in the early hours of the morning. They too were accomodated at the student dorms in Tirana.
As of Sunday, a total of 5 planes and 457 Afghan citizens fleeing the Taliban regime have arrived in our country.
A few days ago, PM Edi Rama said during an interview for the international press that around 4.000 Afghan refugees are expected to arrive in Albania.
The arrival of Afghan citizens has sparked a lot of debates in the public sphere in Albania, where some see it as a necessary humanitarian gesture, while others believe it to be a ‘favour enforced by the US’. Rama has denied all these accusations saying that “Albania is only doing this in order to fulfill the responsibilities that fall upon any NATO-member state”.
