64 MPs that will be participating in the new parliament come September have never worked in a legislative position. All four major parties that will be represented in the new parliament this year, have significantly changed their composition.
The Social-Democratic party is going to be represented by an entirely new group of members, whereas SMI has only presented one new name, amongst its 4 MPs.
The Socialists and Democrats have changed at least half of their parliamentary representatives.
31 out of 74 Socialist MPs will be sitting in parliament for the first time.
According to Afrim Krasniqi, from the Institute of Political Studies, the new figures in parliament aren’t exactly the best of news, when it comes to having a qualitative body of legislators.
“The ones that usually come in, are generally local personalities with little experience in national politics and who face great difficulties in integrating and ultimately achieving the parliamentary quality that is necessary to overcome the new challenges facing Albania,” argued Krasniqi.
Citizens themselves don’t seem to have any high expectations when it comes to politics.
“I believe that our political system will never change,” – said a citizen, who simply reinforced a phrase that is heard frequently.
A unique feature in terms of the old socialist MPs that will be sitting in parliament this September, is that only 2 of them have served as MPs since the 90s: Eriond Brace, elected in 1996 and Petro Koci in 1997. Blendi Klosi and Fatmir Xhafaj were both elected in 2001.
The Democratic Party on the other hand, is beginning this new chapter with 29 new MPs, out of its total 59 representatives in parliament.
Amongst the democrats, Sali Berisha and Tritan Shehu were elected since the first ever pluralist parliament in our country back in 1991. Dashamir Shehi was elected back in 1992.
Amongst the 64 new MPs, 25 are women: 13 are Socialist MPs, 10 are Democrats and 1 is a Social-Democrat.
