At a time when Albania is expecting to accommodate around 4 000 Afghan citizens, the 607 that have arrived in our country thus far, are being subject to a process of identification and registration. Sources close to Euronews Albania at the Department of Public Justice have reported that a unique database has been set up in order to facilitate the entire process.

After the arrival of the first plane of 121 Afghan refugees, we have learned that the process of registration and other procedures like fingerprints and photographs were taken at the Rinas airport, after which they were transferred to a hotel at the area of Golem, in Durres.

The registration process also known as ‘screening’, is taking place at the police post office at QS student residences, where the majority of Afghan arrivals to Albania have been accommodated.

Sources have reported that all Afghan nationals have been registered and verified in Afghanistan before their arrival and now, their lists are being checked by the Albanian police.

PM Edi Rama has said that around 4 000 Afghans might be coming into our country in total and the entire infrastructure necessary to welcome and accommodate them has been set up.

Albania immediately responded to the call for help made by the United States asking countries to provide shelter to the Afghan citizens that have served as their collaborators during the 20-year war in Afghanistan and their lives are now at risk due to the Taliban coming back to power.
