An Afghan family has been isolated on Monday after suspicions that they might have contracted COVID-19. In the images secured by Euronews Albania, medical equipment can be seen in one of the rooms of ‘Qyteti Studenti’, the student dormitories being used to temporarily shelter Afghan refugees.
Authorities have secured the perimeter, while police are surveilling the area 24/7. Behind the camera, several workers from student dormitories maintain that the family has been isolated after testing positive for COVID-19.
On the other hand, the directorate of “Qyteti Studenti” is not only denying that one of the families has been diagnosed with the virus, but also that there aren’t any Afghan refugees in the building altogether.
“At the moment, there are no Afghan citizens at Qyteti Studenti. The tests are conducted inside the dormitories and everyone tested negative”, the director said.
When Afghan refugees arrived in Tirana, authorities said that all of them had tested negative for COVID-19, and eventually were transferred to Lezha, avoiding quarantine in the capital.
It remains unclear why the family has been isolated, and if they have indeed tested positive for COVID-19, why aren’t authorities releasing this information to the public.
