Albania’s youth has been increasingly looking outside the country’s territory to find employment, with many of them saying that their future belongs elsewhere. The most common reason we received from some of the youngsters we spoke to was “unemployment” and a “weak economy”.

Even those who had lived abroad for some time responded that they did not regret their decision.

Dajana Puka is an Albanian student in Romania.

“I chose to study abroad because I could not pursue my major, movie directing, here in Albania. I don’t think that culture gets the right appreciation here. You can live wherever you like, but at least study in a country where the education is better”, she said.

Employment agencies confirm that the number of those knocking on their doors seeking to find a job, especially after the pandemic, is on the rise.

“Application rose considerably during the pandemic, more than 2-3%, manly 20-30 years old. If we have 800 applications per day, a maximum of 40 or 50 gets accepted. The majority of the posts sought for are in the hotel and tourism industry”, explains Era Rrumbullaku, director of an employment agency.

According to INSTAT data, an estimated 23,854 citizens left the country last year, despite being in the midst of the pandemic. The younger generation was the most affected, where the 15-29 age group shrank by 18,000 people.
