The National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo sent a letter to President Vjosa Osmani where it requests to postpone the local elections due on October 17, as the country is in the midst of a COVID-19 crisis.
“We recommend to postpone the electoral process, namely ban public activities, gatherings and rallies until the succeeding epidemiological evaluation”, appealed the country’s health institute.
President Osmani has taken their request under consideration as she immediately called representatives from all political subjects to discuss the matter.
The meeting is set to take place Monday at 4:30 PM.
Opposition parties have been against the idea of postponing the elections, accusing the party in force, Vetevendosje, that it is trying to dodge accountabilities in front of the citizens.
On September 2, the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, proposed to cut down the elections campaign, from one month to two weeks, amid a worsening epidemiological situation.
On Friday recorded 30 victims from COVID-19, a figure that has been persistent for around 2 weeks in the country, while the number of confirmed deaths from the beginning of the pandemic is 2,758.
