The border between Greece and Albania has turned into the main route, located at the heart of Europe, being used by migrants trying to reach EU member states.

During a recent visit to Greece, AP noted that some 50 people sought shelter in a forest, where they had found an abandoned home.

They all want to cross through the Albanian border, only a few kilometers away.

“I want to leave; I have a foot injury. I can barely walk. I was hit in Darra in my home country”, says e Syrian migrant.

Abdallah has been living in Albania for 50 days, together with his wife and 5 children aged 5-15. It is their sixth bid to cross the border.

“I want to pass through Albania and Serbia, but the German, Italian, and Hungarian Frontex are positioned at the border with Albania. It’s very difficult to cross”, said another migrant.

Migrants who don’t want to stay in Greece have several options, but all of them are illegal.

One is to find a boat and sail to Italy, the other is fake flight tickets, or walk across Bulgaria, North Macedonia, or Albania.

But with an ever more difficult to reach Bulgaria and a hermetic North Macedonia, migrants are eyeing Albania as a safer passage.
