The proposal to extend the term for vetting the countries’ judges and prosecutors is going to be referred to Parliament in the next couple of days, announced the minister of justice, Ulsi Manja.

Manja also underlined that the Socialist ruling party has begun negotiations with the opposition regarding this new draft. In addition, they’re also carrying out discussions and consulting with Albania’s international partners.

According to the justice minister, the only way to fill in all the vacancies currently present in our judicial system is to raise the number of admissions into the School of Magistrates, in addition to assembling a new judicial map.

Vetting – the process that runs background checks on high public officials has been deemed one of the major reforms to take place in Albania in recent years. According to plans, it was supposed to finalize by the end of the year, but the slow-paced process of verification has led to the need for an extension of the deadline – a decision, which will need to be voted in Parliament.

During the roundtable conference held by the High Judicial Council, EU ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca stated that the Justice Reform produced concrete results, which were unimaginable.

The ambassador also brought up the example of the investigation into 23 former judges, which resulted in their dismissal from the judicial.

“The consolidation of the Justice Reform should continue to be a keyword,” – said ambassador Soreca.
