On Monday, a small plane was found crashed in the region of Kelmend, a remote mountainous area in Albania.

The police declared that the incident occurred at the border between Albania and Montenegro, but have not defined the exact coordinates.

The Mayor of Malesia e Madhe, Tonin Marinaj, said that locals immediately went to the scene of the incident to offer first aid, but were told to leave.

Marinaj explains that when the locals approached the small plane, which according to their testimonies had landed in the area and crashed during an attempted take-off, but the people on board told them to leave as they did not need any help.

“According to the townspeople, an aircraft landed and then tried to take-off again, but crashed. The locals went to the rescue, but were told to leave”, said the mayor of the municipality where the incident occurred.

Asked about any potential clue that the incident might be similar to that of Divjaka, the mayor said that it is a matter being investigated by the police.

A similar plane was found crashed in Divjaka in May 2014. Authorities later determined that the small aircraft was being used to transport 30 kilos of cannabis to Italy, during takeoff.

Sources told Euronews Albania that several pieces of the engine were found nearby, raising doubts that the aircraft might have crashed during landing.

The mayor also revealed that the people on board were picked up by an SUV.
