President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has declared that the majority of leaders from the 27 EU member states have expressed their stance in favor of the block’s enlargement – bringing in both Albania and North Macedonia.
“There are two things we can take away from today, after hearing the debate and comments made from the leaders, the overwhelming majority have expressed their support in the process of enlargement for Albania and North Macedonia, and this includes the sceptics, which is a clear sign,” – declared Von der Leyen.
The EC president also expressed her full conviction that the dispute between North Macedonia and Bulgaria, which has hampered the integration of both Albania and North Macedonia, will soon be resolved.
According to Von der Leyen, the €30 billion euros of investments in the region represent a clear indicator of EU’s engagement.
“The fact that we are investing €30 billion euros in the region speaks clearly of our goal. I am completely convinced that this won’t only serve the Western Balkans, but that it also served the European Union and will mitigate the journey towards enlargement,” – concluded the EC president.
The leaders of 27 EU member states met today in Brdo, Slovenia with the leaders of six countries of the Western Balkans, as part of the framework of the 2019-2024 strategic agenda.
