The recent increase in the price of bread, and several other products, was met with wide discontent among the citizens of Vlora, with the elderly being the ones to pay the highest cost.

“What are we supposed to do? We used to buy bread for 50 cents, now it is 60. Why is it that always those who are rich get even richer? All prices have increased”, complained a citizen we spoke to.

“Consumption has fallen, but we can’t yet measure if it is from the price hike or because emigrants left. This plunge is always reflected during this period from the end of September to October”, said a merchant.

It has become a daily habit for shops to lend food to citizens, while the latter write their name down on a list, along with the amount of money borrowed for the food purchased.

The situation seems to have spread across the bars of the coastal city too. With tourists now gone, the people of Vlora spend less, told us a manager from one of the bars in the area of Lungomare.

“The increased price in the basket of goods has definitely affected our prices and the forecasts for the future warn that it will definitely penalize the business as well”, added the manager.

The chairman of the Vlora Chamber of Commerce said that what matters the most in this crisis is for the government to have a detailed plan, not only for the people but businesses too.
