The highest institution of the Muslim Community in North Macedonia has voted to dismiss Chief Mufti Sulejman Rexhepi.

Muftis from various cities in North Macedonia voted to remove him from his post.

Until the election of the new one, the Islamic Muslim Community will be led by the Gostivar Mufti, Shaqir Fetahu.

Chief Mufti Rexhepi was very controversial recently due to the open disagreements with the government regarding the COVID-19 crisis.

He decided to open mosques regardless of the government’s recommendations to keep them closed.

He also requested that the government’s financial packages should include funds for the Islamic Faculty of Science.

Rexhepi also opposed the curfew imposed by the police during the Bayram holiday (Eid).

The former Chief Mufti was very controversial about his personal life as well.

A few days ago some pictures showed him married to a woman 50 years younger.

Rexhepi had been leading the Islamic Community since 2006 and there have been several attempts in the past to remove him from power.
