After the end of voting for the Macedonian local elections, the ruling parties – Social-Democratic Alliance and BDI – seem to have the lead in the majority of communes.

BDI has won in 3 communes so far – Lipkova, Saraj and Plasnice, which are small municipalities, with a small number of voters. BDI has also declared that the electoral process was democratic and peaceful overall.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Alliance (LSDM) claimed a ‘victorious result’ in the majority of the country’s 80 communes.

In his first public appearance after the first round of voting, the chair of LSDM, Zoran Zaev, said that it isn’t true that they lost. According to him, they will head for runoffs in 36 communes, including the city of Skopje.

In addition, VMRO DPMNE has come out with accusations of electoral mismanagement.

The main race in these elections seems to be divided into 2 separate camps: LSDM and BDI, which are currently in power and between opposition parties VMRO-DPMNE and the Alliance for Albanians and the Alternative.

Albanian parties are focused on the cities with an ethnic Albanian majority like Tetovo, Gostivar, Cair, Kercova, Struga, Dibra, and several other rural communes.
