Lumir Abdixhiku referred to Sunday’s mayoral elections as the comeback of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).

LDK’s leader said that October 17 will be a date that will be remembered with pride.

“As LDK, we will proudly recollect October 17, just like we look at February 14 as a lesson. The people of Kosovo esteem us when we are right and leave us when we are not – and this is the best virtue of democracy. I would like to thank all those engaged in the process for the results we’ve achieved. A truly major comeback”, he said.

However, the party’s leader said that the result brings no reason to celebrate, but instead buckle down for the next round.

“That is why we need to work for the new round and stay humble, but proud, in front of our citizens. We need to nurture their trust carefully, be that when we are in power as well as in opposition”, added Abdixhiku.

The Democratic League of Kosovo won the municipality of Lipjan and Peja in the first round of the mayoral race in Kosovo.

The party will now compete for 9 municipalities in a runoff.

The Serb List won 9 municipalities, followed by the Democratic Party of Kosovo with 5, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and Democratic League of Kosovo two respectively.

Vetevendosje, the party holding parliamentary majority, was not able to get any of its candidates elected in the first round of the elections and will face runoff for 12 municipalities.
