The government is set to establish the anti-corruption directorate between the structures of the Ministry of Justice.
Justice minister Ulsi Manja declared that the main objective of the directorate will be to tackle corruption in public administration.
Also, Manja said that all previous anti-corruption agencies operating at the Prime Minister’s Office will now be transferred to the justice ministry.
“The directorate will sweep off workers serving to their own personal agendas instead of citizens”, Manja said. “Next time we’ll discuss specific cases that will be made public and denounce them near law enforcement agencies”.
On Tuesday, the European Commission noted Albania’s progress in its fight against corruption, but also highlighted that the phenomenon continues to dominate a large portion of public and business life, describing it as “one of the most serious concerns”.
“Convictions in cases involving high-level officials still remain limited, fostering a culture of impunity within the higher levels of the State. The specialized structures against anti-corruption (SPAK and the anti-corruption and organized crime courts) should significantly strengthen the country’s overall capacity to investigate and prosecute corruption”, EC’s report read.
