Official stats in Albania, in regards to COVID-infections, say that a total of 180 thousand citizens have been infected thus far. However, according to the poll conducted by Euronews Albania and MRB, the number seems to be much higher and closer to 830 thousand.
Indirectly, this suggests that the COVID death toll might be higher as well (Official reports by the ministry of health speak of a total of 2.855 fatalities since the onset of the pandemic).
According to epidemiologist Ilir Alimehmeti, the methodology used in Albania limits the number of officially reported deaths.
“In reality, the number is higher. At a time, when we were doing 4-5 tests, Kosovo was doing 12 thousand tests,” – he said.
In turn, the immunologist, Genc Sulcebe said that in this case, there is another method that could get us to the real number of deaths attributed to COVID-19.
“The most comprehensive method would be looking at the surplus in the number of deaths, by comparing the period during the pandemic and after it. We can take the last 5 years for example and settle on an average of let’s say 22 thousand deaths and if in 2020, there were 25 thousand deaths, then the remaining 3 000 could be attributed to COVID,” – argued the doctor.
