Police discovered on Friday a crypto laboratory believed to have been used for mining in the area of Kruja.

Authorities have detained the owner of the warehouse who had rented the place to another individual whose identity has not been released.

“In the first story of a building owned by S.D, who had rented it to another person, the Police discovered a lab used to produce cryptocurrency. 7 electronic devices have been seized as evidence. Also, the suspects had illegally intervened in the building’s power lines”, a police statement read.

Cryptos remain a largely unregulated form of digital currency in Albania, while its use has been on the rise with many Albanian investors looking to get their hands on digital stocks.

The Bank of Albania, and other relevant financial monitoring agencies, note that there are no licensed subjects certified in trading virtual coins in Albania.

Last May, the Albanian parliament passed a bill on “Financial Markets Based in Distributed Registry Technology”. The bill proposed by the Council of Ministers and mainly pushed by the Ministry of Finance aims to regulate the digital and virtual currency market, from certifying subjects who intend to use it to set the terms and conditions of the currency.

The bill is an internal initiative of the government, not an EU directive, and according to the Albanian government conclusion, the application of a virtual currency can boost the economic profits for the country.

The law entered into force on 1 September 2020.
