Albania’s Interior Minister Bledi Cuci called on the National Inspectorate for the Protection of the Territory (IKMT) to demolish all buildings that do not fulfill legalization criteria.
During a meeting with officials from the Inspectorate, Cuci emphasized that “controlling the territory is among the top priorities of the Government”, and revealed plans to invest in modern technological equipment.
“IKMT is one of the most important agencies. That is why we transferred it to the Interior Ministry because we want a strong agency that is quick in its response to control the territory from illegal construction. You must promptly continue with the demolition of subjects that have been disqualified from the legalization process”, said the interior minister.
Minister Cuci called for better communication between the Inspectorate and State Police when it comes to monitoring the territory, and especially during the construction of new buildings.
Another task Cuci attributed to IKMT is the protection of the environment.
“You’re as important in the environment sector as you are in construction”, added Cuci.
Operation “Our Coastline” began in June and covers the entire Albanian coast, from Velipoja to Ksamil.
Some hundred objects have been demolished and millions have been issued in fines to private subjects, and individuals.
IKMT will also take down objects built on protected areas, as well as on the sides of national highways.
