The Democratic Party submitted a request to the Constitutional Court today, regarding Parliament’s decision to reject the formation of an Inquiry Commission on the Becchetti trial.

The request was presented to the Constitutional by the deputy chair of DP, Grida Duma and Secretary-General, Gazment Bardhi, who called the Parliament’s decision anti-constitutional.

“PM Edi Rama is afraid of running investigations and is responsible for millions of euros, which the Albanian nation will have to pay [in damages],” – said Grida Duma, deputy chair and Democratic MP.

On October 14, the ruling party refused the opposition’s proposal to set up an Inquiry Commission on the Becchetti trial, with 77 votes against to 46 in favor.

Becchetti Trial

Italian entrepreneur, Francesco Becchetti had been granted a concession since 1997, for the construction of the Hydropower Plant (HEC) in Kalivac. He was also founder of the TV channel, Agon. In 2009, the Prosecution ordered the confiscation of all of Becchetti’s accumulated wealth in our country, including Agon Channel, following a money-laundering investigation.

Our government also withdrew Becchetti’s rights to the concession in Kalivac, with the argument that there was a breach of contract.

Nevertheless, Becchetti didn’t leave it at that and took the Albanian government to court by going into arbitration. In the case concerning the seizure of his TV channel, Becchetti sued the Albanian government, for indiscretions and a politically influenced verdict.

As a result, Becchetti and his channel’s investors won their case against the Albanian state, which now owes Becchetti and his team and whopping €109 million euros.
