Representatives of the Public Transit Association met with the mayor of Tirana earlier today. After an hour of negotiations, they told Euronews Albania that they were finally able to get Veliaj to back their demands.
In addition, they announced that by the end of the day, they are expecting to receive an official answer from the municipality, in regards to the allocation of a €1 million-euro-fund. Their demands also include waiving the VAT tax on oil, the excise tax, and the tax on vehicle circulation.
For the past week, public transit in Tirana is working at half its capacity, which has led to traffic jams and congestion around the city.
Through a public statement shared on social media earlier in the week, representatives of the Public Transit Union announced that the reasons for this crisis and the drastic moves that followed have been: the pandemic, the further rise in the price of fuel, employee layoffs, and the general unresponsiveness shown by responsible government agencies when it comes to fulfilling their promises and subsidizing the sector.
