The Constitutional changes proposed by DP and SP must go through specific stages of inclusive discussions and debates before we can think of taking any steps in their direction.
This was advised by the Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC), in a set of suggestions by which its representatives laid out their expert opinion on DP’s recent bid to have all politicians undergo vetting.
The Committee suggested that this issue be forwarded to the Venice Commission for a professional consultation.
In regards to the extension of the term of our current vetting bodies – a proposal made by the Socialist Party – AHC stated that in this case, the ruling party needs to consult constitutional and judicial experts, who have monitored the implementation of the justice reform in the past.
These suggestions were presented through a formal letter outlining 5 main points – which focus on asking both political subjects to refrain from making any hasty decisions in terms of changing the Constitution, and if these changes need to be made, the Committee asks that they comply with all international standards and criteria.
