SPAK has officially launched a probe into Fatmir Mediu, after being forwarded his case file a few days ago, from the High Court.

The case was passed over to SPAK, after a decision made by the Appeals Tribunal, which reopened the former defense minister’s trial, on the Gerdec Files.

Now, SPAK should record all steps of their investigations and decide in the end, if they will take any further actions or simply pass the case over to the First Instance Court.

Mediu’s trial was reopened after Zamira Dudaj, who lost her son in the Gerdec explosions, filed charges against him at SPAK (Special Prosecution Against Organized Crime and Corruption).

Initially, the First Instance Special Court overruled SPAK’s request to retry Mediu, with the claim that all legal deadlines had been exceeded and no new evidence was introduced into the case.

The Court argued that Mediu’s lack of immunity, especially after 2019, hadn’t prevented the prosecution to begin criminal proceedings against him.

Mediu was one of the defendants accused of abusing his office during the 2008 explosion incident at the ex-military ammunition depot in Gerdec, which caused the deaths of 26 people and injured hundreds of others.
