The opposition has asked the mayor of Kruja to step down after the city’s contaminated tap water led to the poisoning of close to 600 residents.

The Democratic Party asked to have this turn into the main topic of discussion during today’s plenum session. However, representatives of the Socialist Party declared that the normal order of the day wouldn’t be interrupted.

In addition, Parliament Speaker, Lindita Nikolla, said that this incident shouldn’t be politicized.

After the plenary session, Democratic MPs Enkelejd Alibeaj and Merita Bakiu called for the resignation of Kruja’s mayor, Artur Bushi and the launch of a full investigation to uncover what caused the poisoning.

In addition, they accused the Government of reacting too late and expressed their concerns over a shortage in the drinking water supply for the city of Kruja.

“There’s a problem with the water supply in the city of Kruja. This has led to issues in Albanian households, in addition to their poisoning. We are worried that the government hasn’t reacted at all. It is horrible that in the face of a massive poisoning incident, the government doesn’t feel the need to react,” – said Democratic MP, Bakiu.

Yesterday, PM Rama commented on the poisoning of over 600 citizens in Kruja. When asked by journalists regarding investments into the city’s water supply company, Rama said that making investments is one thing but making sure the water quality complies with the parameters is another.

“This is something that is undergoing administrative investigations in order to understand what really happened. But, connecting the two, to me, is senseless,” – said Rama.

The Albanian Parliament convened today to hold a vote on the Eurobond draft bill that will be emitted by the minister of finances and the economy. In addition, they’re also planning to vote on the 2022 State Budget draft law.
