The Institute of Public Health (ISHP) released test results of the samples retrieved from the water supply system in Kruja after around 600 citizens fell sick.
ISHP found that the cause behind the contamination was the presence of enterococcus in the water.
The deputy director of the institute, Dritan Ulqinaku declared that the bacteria was only found in one of the water sources, which may be the cause of the gastrointestinal health issues reported among the citizens of Kruja.
Ulqinaku explained that it might have resulted from rainwater, which could have potentially mixed with the drinking water sources resulting in the poisonous cocktail that brought around 600 citizens with similar symptoms to the hospital.
“It’s a hydric epidemic and I believe that the responsibility falls on Kruja’s water supply. It should have reacted in a timely manner, as soon as the first turbulence was caused”, said Ulqinaku.
Around 600 citizens fell sick in Kruja over the course of the last two days, including children.
A majority were admitted to hospital and released afterward, however there were other citizens who suffered more severe complications.
