On Tuesday, local elections held in 2019 will go under the lens of the Constitutional Court. The Association of Albanian Municipalities lodged a complaint to the court, raising allegations on the constitutionality of the mayoral elections.

In addition, the association wants the court to also verify the registration process of the Democratic Conviction Party.

This session comes after the Venice Commission’s opinion ruled that the Constitutional Court has no competencies in adjudicating an electoral process as “unconstitutional”, but it might however control electoral legislation.

A representative of the association, Jordan Daci, maintained that the Commission was in fact wrong in its ruling.

“The Venice Commission ignored all the practices of the International Human Rights Court. According to the law, the Constitutional Court must adjudicate the matter”, declared Daci.
