Data published from Eurostat rank Albania first in terms of its citizens risking poverty and social exclusion.
Coming in second is Montenegro, at 36.6%, and then North Macedonia 34.2% and Serbia 31.1%
The percentage of Albanians seen as at risk of plunging into poverty in 2019 was almost twice higher than the EU’s average of 21.1%.
According to Europe’s statistical institute, the indicators that point to poverty and social exclusion are influenced by work intensity, education levels, living conditions, and migration.
Albania is now facing a rise in consumer prices, while the government has also proclaimed an energy crisis.
INSTAT, Albania’s institute of statistics, reported that an average family spends around 32,000 (€260) Albanian Lek for food, almost 42% of its income.
This percentage tends to become higher for households living on a minimum wage, reaching up to 80% of their income.
