DP’s deputy chair, Grida Duma said that the boycott of the local elections in 2019 was only a result of the radicalization that characterized Democrats at the time, after they had relinquished their mandates.

“I have a strong conviction that we were conditioned by the radical circumstances we had found ourselves in. Which means that we couldn’t keep being the political force that got pushed around,” – said Duma.

During her interview for Erla Mehilli on Euronews Albania’s ‘Now’, Duma underlined that the opposition has paid the price for its choices and radical behaviors in the past.

“We carry with us all the responsibilities of what brought us to where we are now. As such, I can’t tell you whether it was right or wrong. It came with a price. But it was definitely a constraint of a context that only came as a result of a previous context,” – said Grida.

According to Duma, the Democratic Party is ready for the partial local elections, despite the internal crisis it is currently faced with.

“There is no real individual and real democrat, that even at a moment of complete crisis, doesn’t know how to side with what is right and at the right time, even during these elections, and who doesn’t know how to fight a battle or face a challenge,” – argued Duma.

When asked whether or not she fears the fact that PM Rama will try to once again, use his accumulated power to win, Duma said that Democrats don’t expect him to reflect, but they will make this impossible for him.

“There is no way that Rama won’t repeat himself. By collaborating with our strategic partners, we will be able to increase punitiveness for the money of crime and [abusive] power,” – said Duma.
